About
Vancouver Island University (VIU) is a public Canadian university located in Nanaimo, British Columbia, with satellite campuses in Cowichan, Powell River, and Parksville-Qualicum Beach. It was first founded in 1936 as the Dominion-Provincial Youth Training Centre, then became Malaspina College in 1969, and following a succession of transformations, was officially designated Vancouver Island University on September 1, 2008. VIU offers more than 120 programs at the undergraduate, graduate, diploma, and certificate levels in the fields of Science, Arts, Business, Education, Health, Trades, and Technology. It has institutional and programmatic accreditations in Nursing, Business, and Interior Design, among others. It enrolls about 12,600 students, with VIU welcoming more than 1,300 international students from more than 80 countries, along with a strong Indigenous student body. To support international students, the university provides English language instruction, admission and immigration counseling, orientation programs, financial and housing support, cultural events, and access to on-campus facilities such as libraries, laboratories, and recreation centers.
