The Growing Popularity of Bridge Courses in Nepal: A Trend or Necessity

One definite phenomenon has been sweeping up the graph among Nepali students as the education system here progresses-bridge courses. These short-term and more intensive programs, generally put together for SEE graduates, promise to prepare students adequately before entering higher secondary education. The fad this constitutes raises questions: is this a new emerging craze, or have bridge courses evolved with a necessity for academic accomplishment?

What Are Bridge Courses?

Bridge courses are structured learning courses designed to bridge the gap between two levels of education. In Nepal, these are most commonly taken by the SEE graduates in the break between their final exams and the commencement of Grade 11 studies. These courses are focused on strengthening foundational knowledge in subjects such as science, mathematics, and English which are important for success at the higher secondary level.

Why Are Bridge Courses Becoming So Popular?

Firstly, to comprehend why bridge courses have become a sort of trend among the students and their parents who have just completed their SEE or are on the track to complete, we need to understand why they have become so popular and why the enrollment numbers are so high. The students and parents have begun to understand that most schools which follow the SEE curriculum only end up providing general education, but, when students transition to +2, the introduction of specialized subjects into the curriculum can make it very difficult to adjust. That is where the bridge course swoops in to help by teaching the students in a way that they can be prepared for the rigorous learning that lies ahead of them along with a revamped knowledge on the fundamentals of each subject that they are to learn.

Some students can get super competitive and it's not a bad thing because there are tons of schools which are really well known for their +2 which is super hard to get into due to the sheer number of applicants. And, when you add to that a competition for scholarships, students are bound to find themselves under pressure to perform better than their peers. You can count on the students to excel and perform way better than their peers who have not joined a bridge course which already puts them in a better chance to secure coveted spots in top institutions. You also can't forget how for many Nepali families, education stands as one of the higher priorities. Parents thus consider bridge courses a worthwhile investment for their children to make sure that their child starts off on the right foot in higher secondary education.

Are Bridge Courses a Necessity?

It’s a fact that bridge courses have undeniable benefits that come along with it for the students who are planning to start their +2, but, is it a necessity? What if you choose not to be a part of the bridge course? Well, the answer depends on the students. There are a few that can do just fine without ever enrolling in a bridge course, but, for the majority of students who pass their SEE, it's a different story. There are choices for each student about the stream they want to enter in their +2 and for those who plan to pursue Science or Management stream, they need to have quite a developed understanding of subjects like mathematics, physics, or business concepts. A bridge course can be invaluable in building these aforementioned requisite skills and the same goes for students who are not familiar with independent study. There are only a few students who excel in independent learning and self-study and for the rest, they have grown accustomed to their hands being held throughout their academic life up till their SEE. Students might benefit from the guidance and resources such programs provide. Obviously, as mentioned above, it’s absolute for students who want to ace their entrance tests at the Grade 11 level because bridge courses are the ones that can prepare students to attempt these entrance tests, therefore proving useful in gaining admission into prestigious educational institutions.

A Passing Trend or a New Norm?

The rise of bridge courses in Nepal is more than just a trend—it's a reflection of changing educational priorities. For SEE graduates aiming to excel in their academic journey, bridge courses are not just an option—they’re an opportunity.
